While up in Hervey Bay this weekend just gone, Pete and I went for a walk from where we were staying at the Marina to Urangan Pier. We walked out to the end, 1124 metres in length, according to the information sign at the end of the pier, however according to my Garmin watch, only 890m's, and it was pretty accurate, the pier was partially demolished in 1985 and after protests etc, the last 880m's was saved and 1994, $2 million was spent on refurbishing it. The pier was built back in 1917 to export sugar, coal and timber from the Wide Bay Hinterland.
The pier is now used by locals and tourists alike to fish off or just enjoy the views over the harbour and to the islands within the harbour, including Fraser Island.

We enjoyed the birds that were waiting hopefully for a feed from the fishermen. The Sea Eagle was taking off to catch a fish a young boy had thrown up into the air for it to eat - unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to get a photo of it catching the fish as it dove toward the water. Mr Pelican appeared as curious about us as we were about it, however, I think it was just checking us out to see if we had fish for him.
This sculpture was at the beginning of the pier and the plaque says the boy and fish are singing the 'fisherman's song' - whatever that is. It did not elaborate on that.
