Whale Watching

Saturday, 2 September 2017
Pete and I went up to Hervey Bay, Qld this weekend to go whale watching on The  Spirit of Hervey. It was an awesome experience seeing these majestic mammals in their natural environment.  They are all Humpback Whales who go up to Hervey Bay to 'calve" as the babies do not have 'blubber' when born and would not survive in the colder waters further south. They drink 200 litres of milk each feed and put on 8kg's each feed - mind boggling.

We saw several "pods" of mums and bubs and escorts.

I'm going to let the photos do the talking for me. Enjoy.

We reckon this one could be an offspring of Migalo the White Whale

Mum and Bub

Mum and Bub

Baby breaching - this one played a bit, but not when we had the camera's ready.

Mum, Baby and Escort

An Escort showing off.

Clapping his "flukes" and slapping them onto the water - a form of communication and a cooling system.
