Running

Wednesday, 9 August 2017
I've started running, well that's a bit of a misnomer really, it's more like a jog than a run, but anyway, I'm started. I last ran 3.5 months ago and had a fall and skinned more than my pride. My right elbow took the full force as a I landed on it and skidded along the concrete path. It was rather painful, but healed well, although I am now growing 'hypertrophic' scaring on one spot. My right big toe also got very bruised - I'm not sure what I kicked, I thought it was where the edge where the concrete had lifted, however when I jogged over that spot again today, watching the pathway very carefully and lifting my feet properly, I did notice a "man hole" that was built up with concrete - very obvious really, so I have no-one to blame but myself.

The incentive to start jogging again is the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge, 2018, which I am going to do, along with three other team members. The others are all a number of years younger than me, in fact one is my daughter, another is only just 20 and the third is only 6 years older than my eldest. I don't want to be the "weak link" of the team, so feel the need to get in early with my training and build my cardio fitness and endurance levels up.

I've never been a runner, even as a teenager. However, I have found a sort of "peace" within the running space. I think it is to do with the rhythm and cadence of my stride and I get into a "zone" which allows my mind to quieten, a part from saying "what are you doing to me, I'm shattered, stop I say, stop", all of which I manage to ignore, knowing that my body is able to go far further than my mind thinks it should be able to.  Mind you, at present I'm only jogging 2.5 km's at a time.

Moon rising.
Monday night's jog was at Moffat Beach, Sunshine Coast, Qld, while waiting for my Animal Flow class to begin - I had 50 mins to spare, so thought it would be a great idea to have a 30 minute jog to fill the time in. Hmm, silly me. The view while jogging was glorious, the moon rising over the sea with the sky faintly reflecting the pink from the setting sun. I had to stop a few times to take photos (not because I was gasping for breath). Note to self, next Monday start off with the hill, don't leave it to last.

Then Tuesday morning, after 50 mins of training with my Personal Trainer, I had a 1.7 km jog and watched the moon set on the opposite horizon.

  1. Ouch, that is a nasty fall you had.
Having an event you are training for plus training with others is the best motivator I think. I've ran a lot too and ran the Melbourne Marathon in 2014 and my mind was screaming out to me. A lot of self talk is need with running I think. It build so much resilience in us physically and mentally.
I like how you do stop for the views though. Getting in that zone, breathing, hearing your footfalls, stopping for beautiful views, enjoying.
Which distance/course are you training for? How exciting this will be and the memories of your training and then the event will stay with you forever.

    1. Not a running event Kylie. I'm going to be doing the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge next year in July. I'm getting a real head start with training, a bit of running, regular "mountain" hiking, weights, yoga, animal flow and HIIT training.
